Reflections of Self-Assessment

Self-Assessment Reflection:

In comparing my Competency Self-Assessment from the beginning of the program to now, I have learned so much about being a superintendent with the activities we’ve had to complete throughout the courses.  I’ve had opportunities throughout the year in my position as a high school principal to actually implement skills I was focusing on for improvement. My strengths are still pretty much the same; I have a passion for curriculum and instruction and in developing my leadership skills in this area, so this area was my strength at the beginning of the program and remains a strength for me now.  I do feel that my leadership skills have been sharpened, as well as my understanding of curriculum and instruction from a supt. vantage point.  I think I’ve grown the most in the area of finance and maintenance and operations of a district.  The courses and activities gave me an opportunity to delve into these areas that I was not so familiar with.  Although I still have room for growth in these areas, I feel more confident in my skill sets.

Competency 8 Area is still the area that I feel I need the most growth in:  The superintendent knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in relation to district budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology application.  I am confident in my leadership and management skills; however, I need to spend more time developing the district budgeting skills, and financial management skills.

Competency 9 Area is another area that I need to build stronger skills in:  The superintendent knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the district's physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.  I am confident in my experience and skill sets regarding safe and secure schools; I need more experience to build my knowledge base in managing the district’s physical plant systems.
